A major Canada wildfire in 2026 has triggered a large-scale emergency in British Columbia, with around 20,000 people forced to evacuate as firefighters battle a rapidly spreading blaze near Okanagan Lake.
The Bald Range wildfire has burned an area of approximately 156 square kilometres and has moved toward the community of Summerland. Officials say dry conditions, drought and hot weather are making firefighting operations particularly difficult.
Thousands Evacuated as Wildfire Spreads
The wildfire has forced evacuations across several communities in the region. Summerland and Peachland are among the areas affected, while residents have been warned that returning home may not be possible soon.
The fire has already caused significant damage, although authorities say the full extent of the destruction remains difficult to determine because of dangerous conditions.
An 80-year-old woman also died while attempting to escape the wildfire, according to reports.
Mexico Sends Firefighters to Canada
As Canadian firefighting crews face increasingly difficult conditions, Mexico is sending around 100 firefighters to British Columbia to support the response.
The additional personnel are expected to help local crews contain the wildfire and protect communities threatened by the flames.
Officials are also closely monitoring other fires across British Columbia. Around 100 wildfires are reportedly burning across the province, with many considered out of control.
Canadian Military on Standby
The Canadian government has also placed military resources on standby as the wildfire emergency escalates.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged continued federal support while authorities work with provincial and local agencies to protect residents and contain the fires.
Canada Faces Growing Wildfire Threat
The latest emergency highlights the growing challenge Canada faces from severe wildfire seasons. Extreme dryness, prolonged drought and high temperatures are creating difficult conditions for firefighters in western Canada.
Authorities continue to urge residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders and remain prepared as conditions can change rapidly.
The situation remains ongoing, with firefighting crews working to prevent the Bald Range wildfire from reaching additional communities.
